Mark and I sat in a vacant lot laughing uncontrollably. An old church towered behind us.
It was late at night and we were trying to rein ourselves in from some mind-bending substance.
Everything was so funny, we couldn’t stop laughing.
We lived across the street.
We didn’t want to wake anyone up.
A puppy darted around the field, playfully dancing around us.
Mark called to the puppy.
The puppy happily bounced over to us.
Mark petted the puppy.
The puppy ran off to the street and immediately got run over by a speeding truck.
The truck came to a screeching halt.
Lights started popping on in the houses up and down the street.
I looked at Mark. He was looking at the hand that petted the pooch.
Neighbors started pouring out of their houses screaming at the driver.
Mark and I moved back into the shadows of the church.
He kept looking at his hand.
Eventually we were able to cross the street and go home.
We both worked in the morning so I didn’t see him till the next evening.
I met him at the pub.
I could tell he was still freaked out.
He looked at his hand like he had inherited the black hand of death.
We sat in silence even though the pub was buzzing with activity.
I wanted to tell him stuff just happens man.
I looked Mark in the eye.
The only thing I could say was…
UUhhmm..yeah I’d forgot all about that, but now it just comes flooding back..great thanks..I’m just going to wash my hands..excuse me
lol. Aah… Ruff. Great little tragicomic delivery.

I laugh out loud every time I tell the story. Maybe we all laugh in uncomfortable situations?? I really felt bad for the dog and for Mark. I didn’t want the dog to get run over and I’ve never found that funny. I just wanted Mark to move on and not take personal responsibility for the dog’s death. I think I’d probably say the same thing today. Ruff, ruff. Lol! Happy Friday! 🙂
Glad you like. It’s a true story. Hope I made you laugh.
I don’t even know what to say. I was so happy for the puppy until the whole dying part.
There is a comedian John Mulaney that talks about a date he went on with a girl to see Ray (the story of Ray Charles if you are not familiar), they got out of the movie and he asked how she liked it.
She replied “I could have done without the whole little brother dying part.”
To which he responded “Ray Charles could have done without the whole his baby brother dying part too!”
That was how I felt about the journey of your post… WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DIE?! WHY? Well happy Friday to me, but is it sad that I laughed at the end? Now your friend has the hand of death. He should go around saying “Forgive me if I don’t shake hands.” With a Southern Drawl.
Great really sad – funny story!
